Thanks to the smile design, which is among the most common applications of aesthetic dentistry, which is a multi-disciplinary field, problems such as gingival recession, tooth distortion, gingival smile, calculus, and yellowing in tooth color are successfully treated.

What is Smile Design?

Smile design is a cosmetic dentistry application that combines art and dentistry, which provides solutions for mouth, tooth, and jaw problems that prevent a beautiful smile, by applying dentistry fields such as endodontics, periodontics, orthodontics, and prosthesis together with personalized solutions. Smile design, which is among the main applications of cosmetic dentistry, does not have a single type of treatment applied to everyone, different treatment options are applied to the individual.

Smile design includes treatments and techniques applied in order for the jaw, tooth, and lip position to gain an aesthetic appearance according to the facial features of the individual, mouth, and jaw structure during smile and posture. For a successful smile design application, different disciplines can be used according to the needs of the individual. For example, many different interventions can be applied, such as a bridge or implant treatment in case of missing teeth, and orthodontic treatment in crooked teeth.

How to Smile Design?

The dentist prepares the most appropriate treatment plan by considering the needs and demands of the individual applying for smile design. The treatment plan is based on protecting the oral and dental health of the individual and eliminating the problems, and then responding to the expectations by eliminating the aesthetic concerns. In aesthetic dentistry, the priority is "individual health" and then "aesthetic" expectations are met. The most common operations referenced at this point are:

Orthodontic applications for crooked teeth,

Various interventions for determining the smile line and tooth length,

Orthodontic or bonding applications for split teeth, Periodontology treatments for gingival recession,

Tooth bleaching,

Zirconium, laminated or porcelain tooth veneer applications,

Endodontic treatment and aesthetic filling application for broken or decayed teeth,

Other treatments and applications according to the needs and demands of the individual.

Smile Design Treatment Stages

Since smile design, which uses different disciplines and fields to fully respond to the needs and demands of the person, and which is a unique process for the individual, a single treatment cannot be mentioned, the general treatment stages will be expressed:

  • In order to evaluate the current situation of the individual and to plan the treatment, the existing mouth, teeth, and jaw structures are transferred to the digital environment with the 3D intraoral scanning method.

  • Photographing the smile and lip positions from different stances and angles for the purpose of examining the existing smile.

  • In order to meet the expectations and needs of the patient, the applications to be applied are determined, treatment planning is made and the patient is informed. At this stage, the demo view of the final state is shown to the patient by making use of the technology, and the treatment is started upon approval.

  • In treatment and mock-up application, treatment of decayed teeth, application of orthodontic treatments, application of filling and root canal treatments, gum treatments, etc. are applied.

  • Mock-up (temporary) teeth are attached by taking digital tooth measurements with three-dimensional intraoral scanning.

  • Rehearsal of dental veneers prepared in accordance with the digital dental measurements taken from the relevant person.

  • Completion of permanent applications if the rehearsal is approved.
